How to prepare your property for a safety check

Five minutes of preparation before we arrive usually means we finish in one visit instead of two.

How to prepare your property for a safety check

Almost every job we cannot finish in one visit comes down to access. A few minutes of preparation before we arrive saves everyone a second appointment.

Clear access to the things we need to reach

Our technicians need to physically get to the equipment. That usually means the switchboard, the hot water unit, any gas appliances including the heater, and every smoke alarm in the building. If a wardrobe has been built in front of the switchboard or there is furniture stacked under an alarm, let us know when you book so we can allow for it.

  • Switchboard and meter box reachable
  • Space in front of gas heaters and hot water units
  • Nothing directly under ceiling-mounted alarms
  • Side gates unlocked, and dogs secured

Make sure someone can let us in

For rental properties, confirm the access arrangement before the day. If the tenant is going to be home, they need to know we are coming and roughly when. If we are collecting keys from an agency, tell us which office and what hours it is open. Where a tenant is present, our technicians will introduce themselves and explain what they are doing before they start.

Tell us what you already know

If an alarm has been chirping, a power point has stopped working, or the heater has been making a noise, mention it when you book. It takes thirty seconds and it means the technician arrives expecting to look at it rather than discovering it at the end of the visit.

Allow a little more time than you think

How long a visit takes depends on the size of the property and what we find. A straightforward alarm service is quick. A full electrical and gas check on an older house with several appliances takes longer, particularly if something needs repair on the spot. If you are working to a tight window, say so when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
